Introduction to Motivational Interviewing

A great MI start for anyone who has minimal or no prior MI training. Training will be useful to professionals in higher education, health care, social work, counseling or secondary education.   Includes updated concepts from the 3rd edition of Motivational Interviewing: Helping People Change (Miller and Rollnick).  Methods will include presentation, demonstrations, videos and partner practice.

  • Spirit of MI: what, why and how.
  • 5 key skills for effectively engaging with students/patients (OARS)
  • 3 major roadblocks and how to avoid them (RULES)
  • Diffusing “defensiveness”: What does research tell us?
  • Leading them to water: how to evoke interest in change
  • Interactive practice opportunities to try it all out, using examples from health care, higher education and brief conversations about lifestyle.

$80 for professionals and $35 for students (limited number)
