This 2-day intensive workshop will introduce workshop participants to the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity Coding System (Version 4.2.1). The MITI is a behavioral coding system that measures how well a clinician is using Motivational Interviewing (MI).

This workshop will discuss how to use the MITI to evaluate clinician use of MI. Participants will have ample practice with the MITI method for assessing use of MI in a wide variety of problem areas, including problematic substance use, smoking cessation, ineffective parenting, and illness mis-management. Participants will receive feedback on their coding practice. This workshop will include discussion of the use of MITI in supervision and coaching, and will address how to give effective feedback based on MITI coding worksheet data.

This workshop is designed for individuals who have completed introductory MI training, practiced MI in an applied setting, and who are interested in learning the MITI for advanced MI practice, supervision, coaching, or research.

Training Objectives:

  1. Understand key concepts in MI fidelity coding.
  2. Assess critical elements of MI skills using verbal anchors.
  3. Evaluate clinician use of MI with assignment of 10 clinician behavior codes.

  5. Increase understanding of inter-rater reliability.
